I absolutely LOVE to create. It’s a compulsion at this point, and I’m very lucky to be able to do it full time. After a career in museum management I ditched the suit, pumps and boring glasses in favor of jeans, loose shirts, tennis shoes and fun specs.
But I’ve come to realize that sharing my love of sewing with others, young and old alike, is just as rewarding as the act itself. Five years ago, I connected with three kids in my neighborhood and taught them the basics of sewing. We made funny stuffed animals, a mushroom fairy house, and fancy tote bags. One of my students was only four and couldn’t reach the sewing machine pedal. After a bit of brainstorming, we decided to put the pedal on the counter so she could operate it by hand! They loved learning new skills and being creative, I loved guiding them through the process, and Kreative Thread Studio was born!
My husband and I built a space with cutting tables, sewing machine counters, shelves, spool holders and so much more. This space has become the perfect studio for me to explore my own creativity and help others discover theirs.
I’ve found so much personal satisfaction in teaching others to sew! For my next project, I’ve decided to start a blog to share my experiences with teaching, designing, and bringing ideas to life.
Are you making a living sewing? I’d love to hear your story.
